Wedding Bells

by Ali

0f3173218bc8d95e48dfd56a794cb263

The date is just a few weeks away, the dress is complete and yet there still seems like lots of little details to take care of before the date looms even closer.  Place cards, welcome bags, wedding vows, oh my! Besides the joy I feel of spending my life with a truly wonderful man, shopping for accessories with my dress is quite exciting.

First up, the shoes.  No dyeables for my feet. This is my chance to go glam and unexpected with the shoes since the dress is far from Cinderella poofiness. It’s a stunner all on it’s own without even a body in it. I’m a lucky girl to have French couture designer Lloyd Klein make me a couture gown that could easily grace an A-list celeb on the red carpet at the Oscars.  So while there’s no chance for an Oscar I’ll carry my flowers with a big ass smile on my face. Watch out pageant queens, my smile and walk will out shine you all in my pale peach confection of perfection.

Shoes, shoes, shoes

Truly a splurge
Christian Louboutin, $745

Jimmy Choo, $775

Jimmy Choo, $595

Christian Louboutin, $1,695

Obviously I have a pattern when shopping for glam that includes Jimmy and Christian. And may I remind all readers, it's my wedding day. I fall off any scale in how far I am from a bridezilla. I've been calm, organized and just can't wait to get it all done and relax and then of course party! So while shopping at Neiman Marcus I couldn't take my eyes off designs by Rene Caovilla. Each time I handed my finely dressed salesman a pair he came back and said, "Sorry no size 8 1/2." And then he emerged carrying a box with a glorious pair of heels that had just arrived and hadn't even been brought out for viewing yet. They couldn't be found on any website yet and they were THE PAIR.  The photo below does not do them justice. They are amazing--shimmering and shiny with a dash of disco on the bottom. Three men speed walked to where I sat in the shoe department to compliment how gorgeous they looked. They are not your stereotypical bridal shoes and everyone at the house of Lloyd Klein gasped with a satisfied glee at how well the heels complimented the drape and color of the dress. I'm not telling how expensive they were, I'll just say they were a splurge like Jimmy and Manolo and Christian are.
Rene Caovilla

A Little Cover
Before Lloyd Klein made an exquisite wrap for my dress for those just in case chilly moments, I shopped for a little cover for when the sun goes down.

Something vintage came to mind
A little mink cape for over the shoulders from RubyLane.com

Hair
So the plan, assuming the plan comes together will be for a modern, fuller version of Veronica Lake style hair. And the talented Theodore Leaf, hopes to pin in a little something on the side.
I’m gushing over this transformative piece from Jennifer Behr—you get the veil without succumbing completely. Tres chic and romantic, but also expensive for a hair piece. If I had time to be crafty I’d possibly try to create a special piece, but I’m a little too nervous to trust myself to a glue gun with only a few weeks before the big day.

These are sweet, but I'm still pondering.

Carry

And then a bride like myself still needs a small extraordinary bag for lip gloss, a little powder and a few tissues.
I'm considering vintage, but these look good too.
Laura Merkin, $325

The Jewels

Since I’m skipping a necklace, the earrings will be the focal point in accessories, so I’m shopping for them first. Then I'll search for a bracelet or cocktail ring.

Debeers

jcrew.com for $55

And then there's always "something old" with my love of vintage from my favorite vintage store, The Way We Wore in Los Angeles.

And the earrings I chose--Miriam Haskell from The Way We Wore

Unfortunately a bad photo. The photo misses how lovely and chanel-ish they are.

OOPs! Were you expecting to see the dress in all it's gloriousness?  Well, I can't share a pic until after the wedding since my wonderful fiance does read my site.

Next shopping foray is for our honeymoon in Fiji and Australia. Luckily, I'll have a week in between the wedding and honeymoon to focus on that.

Stretch It

by Ali

635873881a1810d95d4889c9b4a19214

We may have a little less money to spend these days on new items for our fall wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean we have to whine and pout about it. Instead, get smart and choose items that work double duty in your wardrobe or create the trend from what’s already in your closet.
Invest in versatile pieces. Before you buy a new piece make sure you can easily come up with at least two ways to wear it with items in your closet.

The Cardigan
It’s crazy versatile. Wear it with anything in your wardrobe from your t-shirt and jeans to a ruffled blouse and skirt. Wear it open and loose on Monday with jeans, t-shirt and long scarf wrapped around the neck, on Thursday pair it with a blouse and pencil skirt and add a skinny belt at the waist over the sweater. Then on Saturday wear it over your favorite party dress and add a wide patent stretch belt at the waist and a big, multi-strand necklace you scooped up at Forever 21 for $7.

$72

$178

The Belt
The belt you buy should be a neutral color to get the most play in your closet. It should go over blazers, be the substitute for the belt that came with the dress and additionally, be worn over those high-waisted trousers you bought last season. Wide or skinny is up to you to decide.
$68

$32.50

The Vest
Wear it with a tank or tee and rolled up jeans or take a sophisticated turn by adding a ruffled blouse, pencil skirt and add a skinny belt.
$58

Gym Gear
Wear your workout wear with your ready to wear. Yikes, you may say, but it really is possible.  With the right pair of solid black yoga pants you can look quite chic when pairing a) with solid t-shirt or tank and add an oversized sweater that falls just below your hips or rear, b) wear them with a slim cashmere or merino wool turtleneck and add a belt at the waist, or c) just as cute with a striped boat neck top, jean jacket and converse sneakers.
$74

The Boot
This one’s easy and you should all know this. Buy a knee-high boot that has a slim fit and a manageable heel. Skip stiletto heights and opt for a low heel so you can wear them more often. Show them off with your skinny jeans or leggings tucked in, pair them with you’re a-line skirts on casual days and wear your slightly flared pants or boot cut jeans over the boots with no visible top of boot line showing.

Stuart Weitzman $535

Frye $328

Create your own trendy “designer” jeans
Instead of pulling out wads of cash from your wallet for the new IT distressed jeans that every celeb is walking down Robertson Boulevard in Beverly Hills wearing create your own. You remember when these were a trend back in junior high or high school—you know, those 80’s we usually like to forget. Well, put on some Billy Idol, or Madonna and get out the scissors. Pull out a cheap pair of jeans from your drawer or a pair you rarely wear; we all have them girls. Strategically slash your jeans on the middle of the thigh and around the knee area (while you are not wearing them of course), do a bit of ripping, take the scissors or a razor and rub over the holes to help start the fraying and then toss the jeans into the wash to get that soft, frayed look. Voila, you can now reminisce about your first kiss or crush since you probably owned a pair like this back then.

Dylan and George $198

I'm Plaid About You

by Ali

F1addbe4a7d8cdd3571a76191a4993fd

I'm taking a walk back in time, specifically the 80’s when I say The Go-Go’s got it right when they sang, “I’m mad about you” with such whimsy it perfectly applies to my want of stylish plaid in my wardrobe this fall.  Other than the signature Burberry plaid so many plaids offer a look that can digress into such wide categories as lumberjack to society lady. How to navigate the playing field for a plaid that you can call your own may seem daunting, but thankfully there are plenty of options at a click.

Bling It On

by Ali

A client recently asked me how to make a statement in their wardrobe. I said, “That’s simple. Make it big. Choose one big item that is a standout with your outfits whether it be with a t-shirt and jeans worn with a cocktail dress or added to your classic button down and fitted blazer.”

Just choose one outfit maker piece that is big and bold or multi-stranded and has shine. These will work with just about any outfit in your closet and get you a few style steps ahead of the crowd.

Make one of these your new signature piece.

Billboards Be Gone!

Grumble:
Advertising billboards not only litter our minds but also our streets.  A bit too dramatic?

Sure, sometimes billboards are worth it all because they’re uber sexy -- you remember Marky Marky's Calvin Klein billboard from the 80s and “Smith” from Sex and the City's!  Absolutely heart palpitating.  But, sometimes billboards are just… well, advertising that’s going to have a short run and then wind up in the landfill.  Like I said, litter, rubbish, garbage.

Goodness:
Thanks to the gurus at Green Guru, that would-be billboard waste is now fodder for bag, wallets, goggle straps and pouches.  Here's how it works... it's pretty dang simple.

Still pretty simple!

Go:
Surf on over to Green Guru and check out their RAD Billboard Series surfboard bag and small deluxe messenger bag which only cost $100 each.  They’re loaded with cool colors and no two are alike because none of US are alike…  not even Octomom’s spawn.

They also have hemp bags which are majorly on sale right now, so buy up if you’re crunchy.

If you are related to Darth Vader, then perhaps the Blow Out Series is more your speed?  As the name would suggest, these pouches, straps, wallets and bags are made of black rubber from bomber truck and tractor inner tubes, so you know they can withstand some SERIOUS abuse.  The Vulcar bag is $150, but suffice it to say, you’ll never wear it out, so it should last you a lifetime!  The wallet is only $25.

Why should you care?  Because lIfe starts to happen when the rubber meets the road... so get livin'.

Shorts Sense

by Ali

F28694ec9be43b60828221af5cc2050b
So I’m usually a dress girl—I just gravitate towards them. Girly, flirty, feminine, sporty—I can take on all kinds of personality whether soft or strong depending on the look of the dress. And if you don’t find me in a dress then jeans are my substitute-will do in a pinch with a tailored jacket. But as summer and the heat has hit hard I find myself seeing lots of stylish gals sporting cute shorts paired with a variety of looks on top. I’m embracing the trend for those days when I’m working from home and get the spontaneous invite for drinks at some outdoor setting. I prefer to make it chic with a tailored jacket and colorful top or button down shirt with a slight puff sleeve. And best to add a wedge sandal or printed flat.

I am loving my grey Helmut Lang button front shorts with a white short sleeve shirt and my Vera Wang printed short sleeve jacket that I wear with a wide belt over the jacket. Sorry, I can’t show the look from online sites as it was one of those "thrill of hunt," scooped up all the pieces on sale.

But here are a few other suggestions:

CRV (California Recycling Value) this, Arnold!

Grumble:
You drink like a fish and then happily toss those beer bottles into the recycling bin because no matter what they say, your habit actually DOES care about the planet.  Way to go, lady!  I like your recycling moxie, but how about turning those empties into some kick-ass jewelry so you can show the world how committed you are (and when I say committed, I’m not talking about that stint in Bellevue).

Goodness:
Now, I’m not insinuating you should actually DO anything other than (continue to drink and) purchase some of the hottest eco-jewelry out there.  Let’s not get crazy.  You, lift a finger?  Come-come, you’re smarter than that now that you're aware of Smart Glass Jewelry.

Go:
As Kathleen Plate (owner/designer) of Smart Glass says, “you won’t believe how beautiful a beer bottle can be.”  I am SURE your male counterpart has uttered those words more than a few times over the years, and now you can utter them right back at him as you don…

Your new danglers perhaps made from Dos Equis?  By the by, I don't own any of the danglers, but how gorgeous will the blue earrings look with your sweet tan?

Or even your new bracelets perhaps made from Boddington?  By the by, tragically I do not own the bangles but am MAD for them!  How Wonderwoman bad A-S-S are they?!

Lastly, your new necklace perhaps made from New Castle?  By the by, I don't own any of the necklaces, but how killer is it that some of the glass has writing on it?

So, what's the moral of the story?  Drink up, let Kathleen make 'em up so you can buy 'em up which is easy to do since most items are under 100 bucks!!!

It’s good to be ALIVE!!!

Grumble:
With the sudden celebrity deaths over the last week, it’s just good to be alive and well, huh?!? Suddenly, that cold sore, those backed up bills and the annoying flat tire seems awfully trite because THANKFULLY you’re above ground.

Goodness:
With that, here are a few great, green products that will help you channel your inner Farah Fawcett, Billy Mays and Michael Jackson.  We’ll miss you all… especially the unintelligible David Letterman interviews, the overly loud selling of basic cleaning solutions and… well, the nose.

Go:
In honor of Farah Fawcett, here are 3 FAB 70s style headscarves in case you’re having a bad hair day (or worse, chemo!)   Lym & D’s website isn’t up quite yet, but you CAN buy these scarves at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, CA though they are quite pricey at $265 each.  Paying homage to the late, great Farah ain’t cheap, but Charlie says you’re worth it, angel.

In honor of Billy Mays (yeah, I included him in here.  Sue me!)  Here are a few green cleaning products that not only do I actually use, but ones that I really like!  Eco-Me’s cleaning solution is perhaps the B-E-S-T smelling cleaning product out there.  In fact, my house currently wafts with their yummy aroma.  If you’re just getting into chemical free cleaning products, this is a great way to start because they provide the components for you to make your own solutions.  Pick up their  Eco-Me Home Kit for $26 and get cleaning!

Here’s what’s in the kit:
Eco-Me All Purpose Spray Cleaner
Eco-Me Wood Polish Spray Cleaner
Eco-Me Scrub Cleanser

** They also have personal care products though I've never tried them... well, not yet at least!

For that pile of laundry that’s mounting in the corner, try getting rid of your liquid detergent and pick up an Official Greenwash Ball.  You toss the ball in the washing machine and simply add water!  No chemicals, no nothing!  I feel like I’m doing good for the planet, but still have some regular old detergent on hand when my duds are uber dirty.  You can pick this ball up all over the place such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, Whole Foods and of course the Official Greenwash Ball’s site.

In honor of my first crush, Michael Jackson (that was before I knew he was gay!), I’d like to draw attention to our (intact) noses.  People, the nose is the body’s filter for all things bad (and I’m not just talking about the funny stuff from the 80s that people put up their noses!).  Ever come home from a run in the city and blow your nose only to find gobs of black shoot in the tissue?  I rest my case.  It’s dirty up there and deserves to be clean as a whistle!

So, why not treat the nose right and do a little preemptive clean out with the neti pot.  For $13, you can buy your very out neti pot at iherb.com.  As you can clean out your nasal passageway you can tell all those icky bits to "Beat It!"

Swim Chic

Sync your personality with a new swimsuit for summer

When it comes to swimwear I have multiple personalities as I try to connect a bathing suit to an image of sweet and flirty, subtle and sexy or sophisticated and smart.  Perhaps that’s too many requirements to place on small item that first and foremost needs to make a body look good.  And even then it needs to work for me—I don’t want my breasts to look to small or flattened, I want my legs to look long and and slender and my butt to be lifted.  Additionally, I don’t want to fidgit with the fit and be tugging or pulling to stay covered, no thong or boy shorts bottoms for me.
So here’s what I’m choosing between to sport at the beach and poolside this summer. Just add Havianas and water.

Go Green with Your Beauty

by Ali

92581d79782e03fab58caa481b303bb4

Mother Nature is calling. Who says you have to pay the same price for your moisturizer as you do for your jeans. Drugstores have a bounty of inexpensive beauty products with ingredients from nature like extracts that help fight wrinkles, smooth skin and exfoliate to the ever growing green movement where companies kick parabens, sulfates and petrochemicals to the curb.  And they get the job done right. From the extracts to being organic to eco packaging there are an abundance of brands that are giving you what’s found outdoors or should I say in some cases saving the outdoors.

Vickery & Clarke Jojoba and Vitamin E Facial Scrub

It’s 94% natural. Jojoba is a natural exfoliator and Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps fight signs of anti-aging. No animal testing or animal raw ingredients. Paraben-free, propylene glycol-free, petrolatum-free. Also free of sodium lauryl sulfates and sodium laureth sulfates.

From the Poor House to the Pour House

by Marcello

So I’d love to date more often, but I work from home and don’t make a lot of money. I have to be frugal so going out several times a week to bars is not an option for meeting guys. Any suggestions?

- Victoria, New York City

Don’t make frugality a reason to stay home. You have to make yourself available. The good news is that you a lot of options and they’re not all bars. Bars are fine when you want to hang with your friends. But for meeting new people – with all the distractions, noise and competition – not so much. And remember, where there is alcohol there are beer goggles.

Real connections develop through shared interests and activities. Join a club. Take a class. Go to a few parties (even when you don’t want to go out). While you work from home, is there an option to go to an office every now and then, if only to reach out and touch other living beings? The point is to make the effort to get out of your habitual comfort zone, i.e. your home/office cave and prove to the world – and to yourself – that you exist.

All of these options, by the way, cost little money and can only benefit you whether you meet someone or not. Save your bar tab cash to spend on a hot dress or new haircut. When you do go out for drinks, he’ll be paying.

Welcome to Malibu

by Marcello

What does 'California Cool' mean when written on an invitation?
- Decidedly UNcool in California

Imagine yourself at an outdoor party. No rain is forecast…ever. The event stretches from the sunny, dry heat of the afternoon into a cool, breezy evening. There is undoubtedly some tempting body of water nearby and at least one of the guests is destined to take a seductive dip in front of everyone. You entertain the notion that tonight, that guest might be you.

'California Cool' is a little business made to look like pleasure. Look smart, yet definitely unbuttoned. Think green and wear organic. No shiny jackets nor shiny black shoes. Mix high and low. Sneakers with suits. H&M with designer vintage. You’re invited to roll up your sleeves because tattoos and fitness are welcomed here. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses. Facial hair? Yes. Chest hair? No. Pulling up in a sweet ride works too, because you don’t just drive your car in CA – you wear it.

California Cool means you don't really give a damn - but you still want people to notice. However you achieve that is up to you...just don't try too hard.

Oops there goes another rubber tree plant!

by Tracy Metro

Green Eyed Shopper:

Grumble:
1.You just got a pedi, your toes are still wet and you can’t wear real shoes or you’ll ruin the new paint job.
2.You just had the doc remove that horrendous bunion on the side of your foot and you, quite literally, can’t wear real shoes.
3.You just walked the entire Javits Convention Center tradeshow floor, your dogs are BARKING and you can’t wear real shoes or your feet will fall off.

Goodness:
No need to fret little piggies!  90210 podiatrist, Dr. Sylvie created Planet Flops which just so happen to be some of the cushiest, cutest and most natural flip flops on the… well, planet!  Flops are made in Brazil from remarkably soft yet durable natural rubber and are baked under the warm Brazilian sun.  Think about it people, Brazil is known for their thong bikinis, so it stands to reason that their thong flip flops are pretty hot, too!

Go:
Hop on an American Airlines flight to Brazil… better yet, skip on over to Planet Flops and jump on board with every man, woman and child in BH who are wearing Flops.  I bet Donna Martin will be wearing a pair, soon -- and, you don't want to be left out of the cool crowd.

To a Tee

by Ali

F6fa71b931ae0900476b0df3574e5781
The simple white tee seems to have been a fashion staple forever to pair with jeans or layer under jackets and sweaters, but what some consider ho-hum is now street chic.  Graffiti inspired graphics, painterly designs, odes to your inner rocker and messages that relate your view on life are spun in a girlie, softer way turning a simple shape into something arty and stylish.

Swap your plain white for a new vision, a new version and dress it up with a pencil skirt and tuxedo jacket or make it band worthy with biker boots or stilettos

Express yourself in a painterly way in this soft cotton t-shirt cut long with a deep-v neckline. Trimmed with stripes of paint at the front and back.

Rain, rain, go away…

by Tracy Metro

Grumble:
When I say rain, rain go away, unfortunately I’m talking about the rainFOREST!  Uh oh.  When we destroy the rainforest, we displace indigenous people, animals and native species not to mention screw up our climate (but there’s no such thing as global warming)!!!!!!  Did you know that the Amazon rainforest works like an awesome air conditioner that cools down the temperature of the ENTIRE world by a few degrees Celsius?!  Now, ya know!

Goodness:

Purchase an Andira Rain Tee 100% organic t-shirt designed by youth living in endangered rain forests (in Central and South America) and a child living with environmental destruction receives a tree to replace one that has been destroyed.

Go:
Grab a hold of your vine and swing on over to www.thegreenloop.com to help save the rainforest one tee at a time!  You can even buy your little monkey a tee and show them how  getting a little winds up giving a little, too.

Go Ahead and Cut It

by Marcello

7ce8de5a47f88ecd24ac8cbacb31172e
I really want to cut off my hair, but my boyfriend loves it long.  Why are guys obsessed with long hair?  And, how can I convince him that I’ll still look cute with a pixie do?
-  Lady Godiva, Irvine, CA

Clearly your boyfriend is no Hemingway. Yes, the legendary man’s man was crazy for women with short hair, and he often encouraged his long-haired ladies to cut it all off. I dated several women who did the same, and they all found the change empowering. Perhaps this is what disturbs some men…when their woman shears her long locks, she sheds one of the most classic identifiers of femininity and becomes…a boy?

Nonsense. When a woman gets a pixie cut – it emphasizes her face, her eyes, her neck and even her body. Do you remember Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies? (wow!)  No wonder so many women find a short cut empowering – and it sounds like you’re ready for the transformation.

I’m guessing you’ve already shown him photos of famous short-haired beauties such as Rihanna, Halle Berry, Jean Seberg (see above photo) and, of course, Louise Brooks. He’s still not convinced? Then there’s probably only one way to prove it – and that’s to go ahead and cut it. Do it. Prove him wrong and please yourself.

A man's favorite stocking stuffer

by Marcello

Simply put, do guys like stockings and tights?
- Belinda, New Paltz, NY

Not so simply put: It depends. A quick search of the Internet under “stockings and tights” will reveal a virtual international clubhouse of male fans devoted to all manner of leg covering. Try “mukluks with miniskirts” and see what happens. But I digress. If you’re talking those heavy, knitted tights that look really itchy to touch: Yuck, I say, on behalf of all of us. They’re designed to cover you up (and keep you warm, I suppose) – so why not go all the way and cover them up, too. Tights and a short skirt, however, or stockings along the Bettie Page model are universally (and obviously) enjoyed.

In the end, what we want to see when you wear stockings and tights are your legs. If they flatter you and your legs – by all means – pull them on.

Calculate It-ATM Friendly Buys

by Ali

B39ddc60f70ee185cce601be7054ed61
We’re all guilty of saying, “I have nothing to wear” while we stand in front of a closet full of clothes. And with the economy doing what it’s doing to our funds we have a hard time justifying a few new buys.  BUT, these affordable finds mean there’s still cash left in our wallet.

This is the "go to" dress for almost any occasion. Wear it alone for dates and parties. Add a cardigan or v-neck sweater and belt at the waist for a more casual look with flats.

You are sooo cool and casual in this look:

You're a trashy voter.

by Tracy Metro

Yeah, I'm talking about YOU!

Grumble:
Thank goodness the campaigning is O-V-E-R and Obama’s in office. Phew. All’s good in the world, right? Well, not so fast my democratic friends. Remember all the months of seeing those McCain/Palin posters stuck in your neighbor’s yard and the Obama/Biden bumper stickers in a pile at your dry cleaners just waiting to be stuck on said bumper? What about the trash bags loaded with voter registration forms and the mess of soda cans thanks to the thirsty volunteers? Yup, all of that waste is… well, waste!

Goodness:
But it doesn’t actually HAVE to be waste according to Nancy Judd, fashion designer of Recycle Runway. Nancy has been changing the way the world thinks about the environment through innovative educational programs and couture fashions made from trash. Yes, trash, people!!!

Her garments have been on display close to the runway (as in the REAL runway) at Albuquerque’s and Pittsburgh’s airports with upcoming exhibits at Orlando’s and Atlanta’s airports during the summer on 2011!

Go:
Not that you’re actually gonna wear these garments to the grocery store, but they’re definitely worth a peak to see what imagination, innovation and some good ‘ole fashioned trash can do. Oh, and did I mention that she attended the Green Inaugural Ball in hopes of getting the new Prez to try on her campaign poster jacket!?! Listen, a girl’s gotta have a dream just like MLK!

Credit Crunch Conquered

by Ali

4b2edff0f9aedd363d0d0426794e1f0b
The economy is shaky and you’re bummed about making changes in your routine. While we have positive expectations of Obama there are some simple “adjustments” you can make to your style and beauty budget that will yield great results.

Recessionista chic, budget bonanza--both tell the same story. Swap your old over-the-top indulgences and take advantage of these savings.

Want the designer brands, but in this economy it looks foolish to spend $600 on a dress?  Look at the window dressing of the department stores, but shop on the sample sale sites and make it a habit of clicking on the sale button first every time you visit your favorite online store.  Why pay full price for a top from Chloe, a dress from Milly or jeans from James Jeans when you can get them for up to 60% off when click on the top sample sale sites. Sample sales used to be for the lucky ones that live in New York and Los Angeles, but now everyone from Portland to Birmingham to Boston can buy a item from a top designer. You may even discover designers you’d never heard of or figured were out of the realms of your balanced budget. My favorites are Ruelala.com and you can join just by clicking on invited by a member and entering ali@alionthego.com in the Your Friend’s email section or for Giltgroupe.com you can use my personal invitation link www.gilt.com/invite/alison94021 for alionthego.com.

Another way to refresh your wardrobe is to throw a party. I’m not saying send an Evite and spend all day cooking, instead select a list of friends to colleagues to acquaintances and set up a swap.  All you need is a few bottles of inexpensive wine or lemonade and store bought cookies, believe me it’s not about imbibing, it’s about the girl time, clothes and accessories.  Ask everyone to bring clothes, accessories and even home goods like CD’s, books, etc that are in good condition and clean to your home at a specified time.  Depending on how many people attend they can do show and tell or layout the items on chairs, couches and tables. No money is exchanged and if two people want the same items then let them barter other items to get the coveted piece.  Usually everyone leaves the party with something “new” to add to their wardrobe or home. I still adore a super cool retro belt that was originally owned by someone’s grandmother. And with the help of the guests, pack up the remaining items and you as hostess get the tax write off when you drop off the bags at the thrift shop or goodwill.

Still want more? The size sold out in seconds on the sample sale site? Well, try a few of my favorite picks on these sites that stick to under the $100.

Make the the walk to the table at the restaurant your runway when you show off these hot heels.
I bought this bag two years ago on the designer’s site and they still sell it for $198. You can get the very similar version for a quarter of the price.
Get tough with your style choices in your own version of “don’t mess with me” Wonder Woman.

Make this dress match your personality by swapping out the belt for one of your own.
Old Navy, $24.50
Add a skinny belt to this breezy ruffled top and pair it with a pencil skirt or cuffed jeans and you’re ready for work or play.
The classic straight skirt reinterpreted for 2009.
An iconic staple that is versatile enough to "class up" your jeans and keep you chic when worn over your dresses and skirts.
Be chic in a cinch with gold braided belt that adds perfect finish to tops, dresses and skirts.

For Beauty:
I know you're either scared to trade products or you have a medicine cabinet filled with half used bottles. These are two simple remedies for saving money.
Pick it up at Ulta or your local pharmacy. This beat the $100 plus price tags of fancy brands in a Good Housekeeping Institute study and it was an Allure magazine winner in 2008.  I’d much rather pay around $25 for a good product and still get a pedicure than worry that my pricey brand isn’t doing the job and all I’m smelling is perfume.
Skip the wax appointment that costs you $50-90 and take off the hair yourself in the shower—and no ingrown hairs to worry about.

Be The Change

Grumble:
Ever feel like you’ve come to the end of the Internet?  You’ve shopped all darn day and seen the same stuff again and again and again; nothing’s inspiring and everything a bore.  I ask: where did all the creativity go, Bill Gates?

Goodness:
It’s quite possible that all of the fashion and gift imagination that can be found on the web is living on this one site, BTC… as in, Be The Change. So, in honor of President Obama (Woo Hoo!) I thought I’d bring you a company that’s all about change, too.

Go:
March your way over to BTC Elements and make Uncle Sam proud by purchasing products for both the bod and home that have all been vetted for their ecological friendliness!

Some of BTC’s fashions are one-of-a-kind and made from repurposed materials like this mint and red fluffy Barcelona tunic by Armour Sans Anguish…

While other pieces are locally made (to LA) of 100% organic cotton such as this snappy red empire waist, fleece coat-dress by Raw Earth & Wild Skye…

And still other designers fled NYC’s fashion industry to move to Texas (where most of the world’s organic cotton is grown… who knew?) to create pieces made from an organic cotton and hemp combo such as these figure flattering Tailored Trousers by Habitude.

Some of the fun home items include one of my favorite possessions, a basket made from telephone wire (that I got in South Africa). These very similar bowls are imported by the SPIRAL foundation (that has operations in both Vietnam and Nepal) which ensures fair wages for workers.

Yeah, that’s what I call Be(ing) The Change… but what if we altered it just a little bit to -- Barack Take Charge!

Accessories are not hot!

Grumble:
You’re a consumptive A-Hole who still drinks coffee from a disposable paper cup. Ugh.  Are you sure I can’t convince you to use a cute reusable coffee mug? I know it’s not as if there aren’t a zillion cute ones from which to choose!

Fine. You won’t relent? But will you, at the very least, do away with using those silly, wasteful java jackets… for me?!

Goodness:
I bet you will stop using those jackets once you hear about the niftiest thing to hit Central Perk since Rachel’s flip.

This bracelet cum coffee cuff (formerly known as a java jacket) will make every barista drip with envy! The cuff is made from reclaimed architectural veneer, perfectly fits around a take-out coffee cup and then can be worn on your wrist (once you’ve ingested enough caffeine, of course).

Go:
Macchiato your way over to Bentwood and order up a coffee cuff.  While the cuff isn’t exactly uber cheap at about $70, you can rationalize buying it because it serves two purposes… yeah, I know you do it all in the name of recycling.

While you’re enjoying Contexture’s handmade designs, keep on shopping for other fun things such as wallet clips. After all, you DO need a place to keep your frequent-coffee-drinker’s card!

Gotten a little lax with your lingerie?

Have you let the cold weather deter you from wearing pretty, sexy lingerie? Has your underwear drawer gotten too full of cotton boy shorts? Restock your panty drawer and slip on the latest vampy bras that make you feel bombshell sexy even when you wear your corduroys and oversized sweaters.
C'mon girls, find your inner Pamela Anderson in the undies department. I'm not saying imitate her life or her relationships, just add a little of the va-va factor in your underpinnings. I know, you know you're smart and confident so have some fun.

Sweatin' to the Oldies!

Going Green & Getting Fit

Grumble:
You packed on the pounds over the holidays. OK, truth be told it wasn’t only over the holidays it was during 2008’s entire last quarter that the poundage kept piling on (damn economy)! Life’s hard sometimes, I know and Ben & Jerry’s is oh so good. Aye there’s the rub, people. There’s the rub – and I’m not talking about the one your pantyhose are making between your thighs. By the way, who even wears hose these days?! I digress…

It’s time to change your body’s **chemical composition and science is going to help!

Goodness:
Alo’s fitness clothing line is THE perfect blend of product technologies. They’ve figured out how to honor the earth, embrace science, and make you comfy and look pretty dang cute while sticking to the dreaded New Year’s resolution. Alo’s duds are made from organic fabrics including bamboo which wick away moisture (even though you don’t sweat, I know) and prevent bacteria growth.  Um, gross.

Remember all of those bottles of diet soda you drank last year? Well, you don’t exactly have to feel SO bad about that consumption since bottles of the like are recycled to make the polyester fabric used in Alo’s product line. I’ll drink to that.

Go:
Hop on over to Alo’s website, skip around till you find just the right outfit in which to jump and shake your booty. Everything is totally reasonably priced (thank you very much) and can be worn as street clothes, too… as long as you don’t mind advertising the merchandise.

Alo also has your man covered. Unfortunately, abs aren’t included in the package you’ll receive in the mail… but, you know what they say, a couple that works out together… has sweaty sex!

** Note: Chemical composition doesn’t really change but your ass will.

The heat is gone and all I keep seeing is the air I breathe. Jack Frost is nipping at my toes and it’s time to find a pair of boots that look fit for Sundance and Aspen, but are not out of place on a city street.

So when the wind blows, you too can be prepared in these styles.

Bamboo Isn't Just for Pandas Anymore

Grumble:
A plain cotton T is… well… plain, boring, often times produced overseas with questionable cotton and did I mention boring? Let’s be honest, the resources it takes to get that damned, lame shirt over here is crazy unconscious!  But cotton shirts are SO comfy.  How can I give them up?  I feel ya, girl...

Goodness:
What if I told you that you could have the most sophisticated cotton shirt, from an American designer who uses bamboo and seaweed in her designs? You might say something such as, “Tracy, you’ve hit the motherlode!” To which I’d say, “Honey, I didn’t, but that girl, Lara Miller, DID!”

Go:
Hop on over to Clothes Pin (only one of the coolest sample sale sites for indie designers) and check out Lara’s Bamboo Turner Blouse. Mind you, it’s not really a blouse. A blouse is so your Mom and this shirt is so YOU. Sophisticated and sexy sans the slut you were last Saturday night.  FYI, this shirt can be worn several ways, so it can very easily go from day to night to the morning after!

Now, if you want to channel last Saturday night’s tart, you’ve GOT to get Lara’s Suspender Walker Shirt and do it up like the little vixen on the right in the pix. But, keep in mind this X rated version should be worn sparingly or you really will be “that girl.”

Rudolph the Green Nosed Reindeer...

Grumble:
Let’s face it, holiday shopping is a pain in the tuchas (for all of you non-Yiddish speakers out there: butt, tush, arse, hiney, rear). Honestly, it just doesn’t matter if you’re shopping for eco-gifts or trying to be economical with your shopping; it’s all stressful and can make this part of the year loathsome for many.    What? Me -- hate shopping? Someone quick… check my temperature!

Goodness:
Bah humbug be gone because… I found tons and tons of eco-maginative gifts at the EcoGift Festival in Santa Monica, California, this last weekend. Here are 8 stress-free ideas (one for each day of Chanukah) on how to give green and not spend too much green, this year.

Go:
Coffee and loose tea drinkers unite!

What: Java & Health Tea Wands save teeth from stains while allowing on-the-go loose tea consumption.
Why it’s green: Using the wand eliminates use of those annoyingly wasteful plastic stirrers (HATE them) and straws; drinking loose tea eliminates paper consumption with the construction of tea bags; and the wand saves electricity since it promotes single serving usage – meaning less waste.
Cost: Only about $20 (in other word, 2 cups of coffee at Starbucks!).
My 2 Cents: Let’s be honest here, Lipton is so 1950 and you’re so 2009!

Chill baby, chill!

What: ChillPak helps cool your computer down and speed it up, all at the same time.
Why it’s green:  Cooling a computer allows it to run faster thereby lasting longer which eliminates the need for new construction.
Cost: 25 mghz ($25)
My 2 Cents: X-Files actor, Dean Haglund, invented this cool savior and I think that’s just X-cellent.

You’re hot… I mean, your PLANET is hot!

What: Cool Planet Jewelry allows you to be hot while trying to help the planet be cool.
Why it’s green: 100% net proceeds go to orgs like NRDC, all of the metals used in the collection are from recycled materials thus eliminating more mining and their website is solar powered!
Cost: The collection starts at a mere $40 and goes on up to cha-ching!
My 2 Cents: That’s cool.

Play dough(n’t)

What: Eco Kids encourages kids to play with all natural, veggie, fruit and plant dyed art supplies that are gluten, dairy and soy free.
Why it’s green: Um, see the mouthful above!
Cost: Isn’t your child’s life priceless? Oh, well, products range from $14 - $30
My 2 Cents: Red rover, red rover… send some gluten, dairy and soy free dough over!

Baby you can light my fire!

What: Hybrid Light solar flashlight makes sure you don’t go bump in the night!
Why it’s Green: There’s no need to use heinously-wasteful batteries in this solar flashlight, as it holds 10 hours of “on” for over 3 years. There IS a backup battery just in case you’re a vampire who lives in a cave.
Cost: 25 watts ($25)
My 2 Cents: A waterproof, solar flashlight? Yeah, that’ll brighten up a nighttime pool party.

Ready, set, To-Go!

What: Eating on the go with To-Go Ware just got way stainless and way stylish!
Why it’s Green: Let’s see, no lunch bag, no paper, no gas needed to drive to pick up lunch, no disposable utensils, no kidding.
Cost: $20… that’s not a lot of bread.
My 2 Cents:  I could just eat them up!

Who’s trashy now?

What: Wearing trash just got a whole lot sexier with Raecyclements handbags, backpacks and totes.
Why it’s Green: How many times have you heard one man’s trash? Well, here’s one more: One man’s trash.
Cost: Less than that the Vuitton. Anywhere between $26 - $130
My 2 Cents:  Because you actually do need a place for YOUR 2 cents.

Hugs not drugs.
What: Give yourself a hug
Why it’s green: Hugs are carbon neutral.
Cost: This one’s a freebie… unless you count the price of that Xanax (er, I mean Kava Kava) that you’ll need for Christmas dinner with the family.
My 2 Cents: Love don’t cost a thing.

Winter Wonderland

Grumble:
So I’m going to a Winter Wonderland themed party this weekend. FYI, this blogger loves nothing more than getting dressed up for a party, but I ask you: what in the hell does one wear to a Winter Wonderland party? An Ice Capades skating dress, a onesie snow suit complete with mittens and Sherpa hat or go as a Sugar Plum Fairy in sparkles from head to toe? Serious question here: would wearing the wedding dress again be too much? It is white, after all!

Goodness:
You certainly could re-bride yourself if you wore a dress by Annatarian, an **Eco Effective Design Company (um, OK whatever THAT means).

Seriously, this is SO Winter Wonderland… white, flow-y, sparkly! Annatarian dresses (wedding and others) are all one-of-a-kind and made from vintage and remnant fabrics. They also use eco-tech fabrics like bamboo, organic cotton, peace silk and many others. They’ll even use your sentimental pieces of clothing and jewelry (like: your mother's own wedding dress and grandmother's pearl necklace) when making a dress for you. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something GREEN!

Go:
If you are looking for a less bridal dress for your Winter Wonderland party, but still want to look like spun sugar, pop on over to Annatarian’s Facebook page (you know you’re already on Facebook bs-ing around with your high school pals) and check out these fun dresses.

Then, contact Anna and she’ll work with you to create your very own, unique piece of art that brings out your inner Winter Wonderland.

Now that’s what I call looking sweet as sugar.

Green Eyed Shopper:

by Tracy

She's got LEGwarmers!!!

Grumble:
Oh the weather outside is frightful… here on the East Coast, at least! This LA girl is visiting Washington DC for a few festivities and just NOT used to this kind of chill, so it’s gotten me in the mood to bundle up from head to toe. But come on, a puffy parka does not say Prada even though it’s merely one letter off… and out of order… er, whatever! So, the question is: how does one look FAB without being frumpy or frigid?

Goodness:
Legwarmers girls, legwarmers. See, legwarmers aren’t just for ballet dancers anymore. Babies, girlies and mommies alike can all look pretty darn cute as long as they don’t wear THIS pair (even though they’re made from organic cotton).

Listen, legwarmers already toe the line of costume so steer clear of anything that’s not a bold color or a geometric pattern (best suited for those under 10 years old) unless of course you want to look like you’re in the musical Hair or in the main company at the Kirov.

I know, legwarmers are SO 80s and I swore I’d never revisit the fashions of that horrible decade, but trust me ladies, warmers can actually be cute, if worn appropriately.

Go:
If you’ve just recently left the warmth of your Mommy’s uterus, all bets are off and do as you please because (let’s be honest) you CAN, for a little while longer! This adorable rainbow pair of legwarmers from Tiny Bird Organics will not only send subliminal messages for folks to start serenading you with Somewhere Over the Rainbow, but they’ll also match everything you’ve got in your new wardrobe.

On the other hand, if you’re able to form full sentences, why not get all of your BFFS matching legwarmers (also from Tiny Bird Organics) and start a clique that will make ALL the girls (and even a few of the boys) jealous? The more mismatched they are to the outfit, the more your irreverence will be remembered at your 20th high school reunion. Well, they didn’t remember my irreverence, but they DID remember that I wore chopsticks in my hair, so let’s just call it a wash, people.

Now, if you’re of a certain age, follow this Tracy Metro patented legwarmer wearing technique and you’ll be the talk of all the soccer moms. Don a cute, shortish shirt over the 73% organic cotton grapevine stripped tights by Maggie’s Organics and then toss on a pair of Maggie’s khaki colored, organic legwarmers over top of the tights. Layers, ladies! Wear the legwarmers spats style over your killer heels and up to your knees.

Then, strut your stuff on the catwalk. Yeah, on the catwalk… er, in the parking lot. Yeah, in the parking lot.

First (Blind) Date Dressing

by Marcello

Q: What should I wear on a first date after meeting someone online?
- Kristen, Schenectady, NY

A: Assuming you didn’t lie (too much) on your online profile, you should look and dress for the role of you. So if you're the folksy chick who sells her own homespun alpaca hats at Burning Man – I doubt he's expecting to see you wearing high heels. Are you a principal at your law firm who also likes to rock climb on the weekends? I’d like to see how those two parts of your life reconcile themselves on your bod.
Try to wear at least one thing that tells a story. One item that invites questions so that you can tell him more about you (that he hasn’t already fantasized about). It could be a piece of jewelry, a tattoo, a short skirt and hiking boots…
And if you’re wondering whether you should wear something “sexy,” well, we all want to see "sexy." But considering how many people confuse sexy with trashy – on a first date it pays to show it off in moderation. Apply that one storytelling item of clothing to focus on the body part (ankle, shoulder, neck, etc) you know to be most worthy of a retelling.
